When Will I Start Seeing My P90X Results?

Boy, girl, young or old, we all came to the P90X/Insanity/Beachbody fitness table for one thing: Results. I came to the program wanting to get to the point I could do my laundry on my abs. Others simply want to trim down or walk up a flight of stairs without passing out. Everyone has their own goals but in the end the excitement and motivation comes from seeing them all materialize. So when does that happen?

First, a word of advice from some guy named Tony Horton regarding to some worky-outy thing called P90-something…:

“Don’t freak out if you don’t see results in the first 45 days. “What?! No results in the first month and a half?!”  The 90 in…P90X stands for 90 days, not 90 minutes. Some folks will see results the first week—bastards! Others will have to wait a little longer, based on age, body weight, how out of shape they are when they start the program, flexibility, balance, athletic background, etc.—this is normal. [P90X was]… created to have a 30- to 50-day “adaptive phase.” This phase is shorter for some and longer for others. Be patient. Your body will adapt, and you will be amazed at how you look and feel.”

As we’ve talked about before, everyone is different. Some folks come into the program very overweight. Others come in with only 10-15 pounds to lose. If you’ve seen The Biggest Loser, you’ll know the heavier you are, pounds tend to come off in big, double digit chunks. If you’re in decent shape or trying to whittle down those last few inches for “rippage”, they seem to come off a lot slower. Either way, if you’re measuring progress, measure your body fat– after all, that’s what you’re trying to lose. OK, Great. So When Will I See My Results?

Chances are, if you’ve got 20+ pounds to lose, you’ll definitely see yourself lighter on the scale in the first few weeks of starting the program. That said, a lot of this loss stems from the change in what you’ll be eating and your body positively adjusting to it. If you’re following the P90X or Insanity nutrition guides, you’ll go from a daily regime of sodium-heavy processed foods (stuff that comes in a box) to a lot more whole foods (stuff you have to prepare).  Sodium causes your body to retain water as does not drinking water all. Your new commitment to drinking more water and reducing sodium will cause your body to shed the water it’s retained, which usually results in a noticeable drop in “Lbs.” when it comes to the scale.

OK, Great. What About Those Abs?

First, “Abs are made in the kitchen.” Ab Ripper X, an all day crunch-fest or all the core work in the world won’t make a six pack peep through a thick layer of body fat and we all know body fat loss comes from eating right.

If you’re already relatively fit and after following your program and the P90X/Insanity nutrition guide, you may see your abs in a month. If you’re a little “fluffier” (and hey- we all started somewhere!), it may take a few rounds. REMEMBER: Your speed in seeing results all depends on where you start and how closely you adhere to the program. In my experience, I ate ridiculously clean, monitored my calories and did the workouts religiously. I began to see my abs around the 60 day mark after starting off at about 18% body fat. Again, not everyone will see results at the same time, but here’s some goals to shoot for if you’re looking for “ab power”:

Women: Since women carry more body fat than men and less of it in their stomachs, women typically need to have their body fat percentage down under 17% to start seeing a toned tummy. Of course, the further down the fat % scale you go, the more “toned” your abdominals will look.

Men: We men-folk tend to carry our fat in our belly, which means we have to get down pretty low on the body fat percentage. For most, you’ll start seeing signs of life around 10-11% and will be able to see your abs (usually a 2-4 pack) when you flex. 8% will bring much more definition and 6-7% will look absolutely shredded. No flexing here. At 6-7%, you’ve got the “perma-pack”.

Patience!

If you’re following P90X or Insanity, there’s no question you’re going to see results. Results may differ depending on your goals and program you’re tackling (more on that in the coming days). But remember this: if you’re looking for results, continue to apply yourself daily, eat right and trust the programs. They’ve worked for millions and they’ll work for you as well!
