Six Pack Secrets: Jared’s Story

At 15, Jared is the youngest member of our Fit Spot! group- but don’t let age fool you on his dedication. Dude is in it to win it and has transformed his goals of fitness into real-world success playing and crushing it on his High School volleyball team. I mean… at 15 he’s on the Varsity team. And with volleyball a strong SoCal tradition, you know that’s no small feat.


Couple his success with the general rise in teen obesity and you’ve got an inspiration no matter what age you are.

What got you started with P90X and Asylum?

I began Beachbody’s variety of extreme programs around the beginning of 8th grade. At first, it was to get some muscle, impress the ladies, make the dudes jealous. All normal stuff, I suppose.  I began with P90X, and it was HARD. I hadn’t worked out previously to that so this was just crazy to me. As I went through it and stuck with it, it became easier and I began to build muscle, endurance, and get some abs.

Then, about halfway through my ninth grade year I joined the volleyball team where you have to move around a lot, and fast. This got me focused on my athletic performance. So I stepped up to P90X2, which really focuses on building a solid athletic base and crazy strong core to go with it. I went through this program and once again I gained great results that helped me be the best I could be with my sport. Around this time, I joined Fit Spot!, a motivational group on Facebook with other people who are in to win it with other Beachbody programs.

I was introduced to Insanity: The Asylum, which is another program by Beachbody. The Asylum promised awesome sports performance, so I decided to try it. I thought I was fit after having done P90X and P90X2, but Asylum totally destroyed me! I couldn’t believe it, it had brought me places I never thought I could go in terms of my fitness. Eventually, a second volume of Asylum came out and I immediately purchased that. I’ve now completed it and I’m still going everyday with my amazing Beachbody workouts. I’ve received awesome motivation, feedback, and support from Fit Spot! and other crazy fit athletes at my school. It’s been really hard work, but it has all paid off!

What is The “Jared” Philosophy on Eating and Meal Prep? What Does a Typical Day’s of Meals Look Like?

Since I’m a growing boy, I tend to eat A LOT:

Here’s what a normal breakfast for me could look like:
-A banana
-An omelet stuffed with broccoli, onions, peppers, spinach, and cheese OR scrambled eggs with all these toppings
-2 pieces of dry whole grain toast
-Sometimes, I’ll even eat a Greek yogurt after all that!

I’m at school from 8-5: 8-2 (school) 2-5 (volleyball), so I need to really load up with food:

At my first break, I’ll usually have something like this:
-Grapes or nuts
-Protein bar (go for the low sugar protein bars) OR nutrition bar (again, low sugar)

A couple hours later, I have lunch:
-A sandwich on whole grain bread: I try to put lettuce or tomatoes on it
-another nutrition or protein bar
-an apple
-veggies to snack on (carrots, celery, cucumbers, grape tomatoes)

In another hour, before my volleyball practice begins, I’ll have:
-maybe another piece of fruit
-a higher carb, energy-packed bar

After practice, I’ll get home and grab some more food:
-a protein shake
-salad with bunches of veggies, beans, and nuts
-Greek yogurt
-whole grain waffles with peanut butter

A couple hours later is dinner:
-really could be anything, but usually a protein (chicken, turkey, or fish), a vegetable, and something like rice, sweet potato, beans.

*Workout time*

-a protein shake
-whole grain waffles with peanut butter
-maybe some oatmeal with berries

Then off to bed!

Being at this age, my metabolism is crazy! But it’s recommended that adults should leave a couple hours between their last meal and bed time.

When Do You Work Out, Typically?

I would say I’m a pretty busy guy. Waking up, heading to school, having a 2-3 volleyball practice, getting home to a rough couple hours of homework. Then devouring a meal, working out, showering, and heading straight to bed to get just about 8 hours of sleep.

Any “Special Sauce” Tips You Can Offer That Have Helped You Achieve Such Great Results?

Most people would rather sit on the couch, watching their favorite television show or playing some games. What is that doing for you? Not much. When it comes to exercise, people don’t do it because it “too hard” or they’re just not motivated enough. I think of the benefits of working out. They outweigh the desire to just sit there on the couch until its time for you to hit the hay.

So what are the benefits that come to mind each day?
Well, some of the general benefits are:
-Weight loss
-Stress alleviation
-allows you to think better
-muscle and strength development
-cardiovascular endurance
-more self confidence and better looking physique

These are the benefits that working out and eating properly can produce. This is how I stay accountable. When I really don’t want to exercise, I think of these benefits and how much better I’ll feel with no regret if I do workout.
