Nicki’s KILLER P90X Transformation: P90X For Boys? Puh-lease.

We’ve seen some great P90X transformations here at How Do I Get Fit but they’ve always been kind of guy focused– after all, P90X is for dudes, right? WRONG. I’ve posted on the P90X’s lady-friendly, fat-torching benefits before but rest assured, P90X will hand-deliver results to anyone with dedication and persistence. If you’re looking for P90X commercial style inspiration —period— look no further than Nicki Robbins–aka- “Red Headed Girl”.

As it turns out, Nicki had battled with weight her whole life. For as long as she could remember, Nicki had been “heavy” and like so many others, struggled with self-confidence that came with the territory. After having unsuccesfully run through the usual suspects of medication, snake oil fixes and fitness overpromises to lose weight, Nicki was frustrated. Then it clicked. One night, after watching the P90X infomercial for the “millionth time”, Nicki decided to take action. The rest is ‘If You Thought You Couldn’t, Now You Know You CAN” history.

That right there? That’s a steady from 175 lbs on day 1 of P90X to 115 lbs. two rounds later. Nicki not only lost– no, torched–60 lbs. she also lost about 30” in body measurement and jumped from a size 14 to a size 2! And the best part– it was a 90/180 journey of patience, dedication and daily choices that lead to success.

What Got You Started With P90X?

One night while watching [the P90X infomercial], I actually decided to stop watching these people change their lives and do something about mine. I had already lost about 25 pounds on Weight Watchers (down from 198 lbs…my all-time heaviest) and was getting into working out but I really wanted to challenge myself. It also didn’t hurt that I was planning my wedding and the thought of wearing that all-important white dress at my current weight scared the crap out of me. I picked up the phone, gave the operator my credit card information and waited impatiently for my P90X kit to arrive in the mail.

How Did You Motivate Yourself to Follow P90X Every Day and Do Your Best?

I’m not going to lie, when I first started P90X, it was a struggle to do it every day. I could barely get through the workouts to begin with and then when you add in the muscle fatigue and soreness, it took everything in me to “Just Push Play”. By the end of week 3, I noticed that I was getting further into the DVDs, pumping out more reps and feeling less tired by the end. By week 4, when I made it all the way through Kenpo X for the first time, I literally jumped for joy! As I started seeing physical results, my motivation really kicked in. My clothes were all getting too big for me and I was starting to like what I was seeing in the mirror. I actually had MUSCLES! On the days I told myself I was too tired or just didn’t feel like working out, I looked at the picture of myself at 198 lbs and was reminded of why I was doing this, how far I had already come and where I wanted to be. Days 45-83 are a blur of countless pushups/pullups, AbRipperX and just “Bringing it”. When I realized I was on my last week, I was almost sad it was coming to an end…almost. As I finished Yoga X for the last time on day 90, I breathed in the deep sense of accomplishment of making it through and giving it all I had. I’ve now completed 2 rounds of P90X and no matter what was going on in my life, I made myself and my fitness goals a priority. I MADE time EVERY DAY to “Just Push Play” because I was worth it. And honestly, if I can do it, anyone can.

How Did You Eat During Your P90X Transformation?

As important as sticking to the workouts is to your P90X results, your diet is really the crucial piece of the puzzle. If you continue to put junk in your body while doing this program, not only will you not see the changes you’re looking for, there’s no way you’ll get through it. I read through the nutrition guide with a fine-toothed comb prior to starting and immediately threw out all the junk food in my cupboards. Instead of pizza, soda and the vast array of sugary sweets I had enjoyed prior, I began eating things like egg white omelets, fresh veggies, baked fish and drinking insane amounts of water. I cut soda and sugar out of my diet COMPLETELY. For the first 45 days of the program (the Fat Shredder portion), I consumed food in the following ratio: 50% protein/30% carbs/20% fats. After that, I upped my carb intake to 40% so I could have extra energy to get through the workouts. I also started using the P90X Recovery drink post workouts to help keep my body from feeling as sore and tired…and as Tony says, it really is “money.” It wasn’t always easy to resist having “just one piece” of the pizza we had at the office or to keep from buying that chocolate at the grocery store. I just had to keep reminding myself that I was working too damn hard to give in so easily…that I was stronger than my cravings.

Were You Ever Worried About “Getting Big” With P90X?

I was never really worried about becoming big and bulky. I had seen the infomercials enough times to see that the women who had successfully completed the program were just really lean. On my resistance days, I always followed Tony’s advice to do 12-15 reps rather than 8-10 so I could sculpt lean muscle vs. gain mass. Bottom line, muscle burns fat and I’m proof that P90X can help a woman achieve her goals of becoming lean and toned.

What’s Next With P90X And Your Fitness?

Right now I’m in the middle of Round 3 of P90X and this time I’m doing Doubles. I can’t help it…I’m hooked. After that, I’m going to bite the bullet and get P90X2 so I can really BRING IT!

How Has Your P90X Transformation Helped In Your Every Day Life And Ultimate Goals?

By doing P90X, I’ve  realized that my true passion in life is health and fitness. Along my weight loss journey, a lot of my friends and family have become inspired by my results and started asking me for help reaching their goals. It’s exciting to see someone making such incredible, positive changes in their life and to be able to help keep them motivated and on the right path. I’m in the process of getting my degree in Nutritional Science so I can work with those who struggle with their weight to become healthy, active and empowered. Completing the program has also shown me that I am capable of absolutely ANYTHING I set my mind to…I am UNSTOPPABLE!

Some Ladies Tend To Shy Away From P90X. What Advice Would You Give Them?

All I can really say is that it works. If you go into it and you give it everything you have every, single day, you will get the results you’re looking for. It is one of the best things I ever did for myself and I’m so happy I put in the time and effort to become the best version of me.

Ask yourself this…what do you have to lose?

Preach it, Sister and amen! I’ve said it before but Nicki’s decision to make a break-through is nothing less than inspirational. You’re never, EVER resigned to “Then”. Make your “Now” happen!

I’m 50 and not sure if I am too old to do the program. I feel good and no health problems but I need to lose about 40-50 pounds. I’ve thought about buying p90x many times late at night too. I guess in my youth (in my teens and twenties) it was easier to workout with friends. Isn’t it hard to stay motivated working out by yourself?
Are you still keeping with it and how long have you been using p90x now?

    Thanks for your time

      Hi Carl!

Thanks for checking in with us- great to hear from you.

You know, your question isn’t uncommon. Thing is, there are PLENTY of 50-something who have completed P90X and crushed results. As you mentioned, you’re your best barometer of success. Everything is up for modification and many modified moves are shown if one becomes too intense- but I’d bet you’d be OK.

I appreciate the fact you mention working out in a group vs. “alone”. While a home workout program is many times a “lone” experience, we’ve created an online community that has changed the game for many. Called “Fit Spot”, it allows my team members to interact and encourage and post progress and motivation to one another. It’s a pretty great space. You can read up about it here:

As for Nikki, she is STILL crushing it with P90X after a few years. The program is so adaptable, it makes it a pretty fantastic ongoing fitness program.
