Army Guys And Ostriches: Finding Your Fitness Jump-Start

So I was talking to my buddy Jeff the other day. As a West Point guy who previously served as a Captain in the US Army, he has a great way of cutting through the clutter and getting right to the point. We were talking excuses, motivation and combining the two in helping people find success in their programs and, as a guy who went through the motions himself and has made some great changes with programs like Les Mills Combat, he’s walked the walk and had some great insight.

Needless to say, I quickly asked him to write his thoughts down and send them my way for you.

He didn’t disappoint:

Get Started

“There will always be time for an excuse. Always be time to put exercise and healthy meal choices off. However, there always seems to be time to make bad food choices and hold the couch down with your butt. At some point the vision that you see in the mirror really is you and it’s not an unflattering reflection. It’s an true and accurate reflection of the way you have been living and the results that lifestyle yields.

When waiting for the perfect time to start, what situations and events need to line up in your life to make it a good time to care about your health? How often has that perfect alignment arisen? You can literally die waiting for the perfect time to choose to improve your health.”

Don’t Be An Ostrich With Your Food

“I don’t advocate “a diet” by any stretch of the imagination. Diets don’t work. They are a temporary fix to a permanent problem. I advocate making healthy food choices 90% of the time.

On the remaining 10%, you rarely should have seconds and certainly not thirds. If you lose 30 pounds and go celebrate with a large pizza for a reward, you are on the way back up.

I am suggesting that you make permanent lifestyle changes and not going ostrich on yourself. Don’t bury your head in the sand thinking your butt is gonna shrink when you stand back up.

Here’s a tip: It won’t. You can ignore the fact that as you age you need to make some adjustments to your lifestyle and you can buy bigger clothes and tell yourself that you are retaining water from flying or something. The reality is that you are most likely retaining crappy food choices and poor health habits. Trust me, that couch will be right there when you get back from working out. It won’t float away without you putting the “two cheek death grip” on it.”

Be Choosy With Support

“For the exact same reason that you don’t call a plumber when your car won’t start is why listening to some random guy who hasn’t set foot in a gym lately is a bad idea in comparison the science and research behind Beachbody programs that are put together by fitness professionals and health experts.

People who are fit want to share the message of how it works, unhealthy people is where your ill-wishers and nay-sayers. Nay-Sayers are poison to your future and your health. Surround yourself with people who are interested in being healthy and working out. That support is what can carry your through on tough days. Tough days sweating and working out are significantly better than tough days in a doctor’s office getting news about heart disease or diabetes or high blood pressure or high cholesterol.”

Stop Waiting- Take Control!

“You can take control of your life!! Take charge of your health and quit waiting for the perfect time to believe in yourself and the great possibilities that await you!

Yes, it’s scary and new and the fear of another failed attempt is horrifically sad and demoralizing. If you just take a leap of faith and believe in these programs and follow them, good things will happen for you! I promise!! I can promise because I know it works.”

Start Today, Start Getting Results Today

“A healthy lifestyle is a series of good choices. It’s not complicated but it does take work.

Every day you exchange CO2 for oxygen you should be building and refining health habits. If you are breathing right now, that makes this a perfect day to start… and if you start today, you start getting results today. “Some day” may never come without being accompanied by an ambulance.
